How to have the BEST maternity session EVER!

Congratulations on your pregnancy! This time in your life is absolutely life-changing! Whether you are expecting your first baby or your fifth, you should document this exciting time. I have two children of my own and, to be honest, ten years ago, I didn’t even know what a maternity session was. These days more and more women are choosing to celebrate the changes their bodies go through and the magic that is motherhood. Educating yourself before you book your session will empower you to make an informed decision. After photographing maternity sessions since 2014, I have learned a lot and I want to share it with you.

We will cover six important things you need to know before booking your session so that you have the best maternity session ever!

  1. When should you schedule your maternity session?

  2. What should I wear for my maternity session?

  3. What do I wear under my maternity gown?

  4. Who should I include in my maternity session?

  5. How to find the best maternity photographer in my area?

  6. How much does a maternity photography session cost?

When is the best time to schedule your maternity session?

Regarding your pregnancy, most photographers stick between 30 and 36 weeks along. Factors such as how many pregnancies you have had, if you are carrying multiples, and if you are at high risk should also be taken into consideration. An experienced photographer will help find the right time just for you.

What should I wear for my maternity session?

When styling your maternity session, the most important thing to keep in mind is your personality. Some women want to embrace their inner goddess and cloak themselves in gauze and wear a crown, some women prefer a classic black and white set in the studio and some women want more of a documentary-style look into their normal lives - in their everyday outfits. Regardless of which style suits your personality, just ensure that everyone who is also being photographed matches the same vibe with their attire. We don’t want momma in a floor-length gown while dad has on cargo shorts and a t-shirt!

Do you want to show your inner goddess or supermodel? Here are a few places you can rent dresses if your photographer does not have a client closet.

What do I wear under my maternity gown?

Depending on what style of gown you wear, there are different things to consider, especially since your normal undergarments are no longer fitting!

You will often need a strapless bra for your session. If you are close to the same cup size as pre-pregnancy, you may use a bra extender. It clips onto your existing bra and makes the band longer to accommodate your growing belly. The link below has several options for bras with two-four clasps.

While some women bare it all for maternity sessions, you may want some nude underwear. Regardless of whether you chose a thong or full coverage, making sure it is seamless will help the gown flow better around your belly.

As a plus-size woman myself, I can assure you that not all bellies are a perfect round bump. One thing that helped me feel more confident and feel more support in my belly was a shaper. These come in both regular andregular as well as plus size and help to smooth out any lumps and bumps. The shaper below comes in sizes small to 3XL.

Who should I bring to my maternity session?

Deciding who to bring to include in your maternity session is an individual choice. You may choose to include your partner, surrogate parents, adoptive parents, children, or even pets. Make sure that children included in the session are well-rested and fed. When including your pets, you want them tired and hungry. I strongly suggest bringing a helper for both, so when it is not their turn, you can relax and enjoy your session.

How do I find the best maternity photographer in my area?

Finding the right photographer is more than searching for the best photographers near you! There are many incredibly talented photographers out there, but finding one that fits your style and budget can be a bit of a journey. I highly suggest creating a  Pinterest or inspiration board before you begin interviewing potential photographers. There are no limits when it comes to editing and styling, so narrowing down what you like most is very helpful. Once you know the style you are interested in, it will narrow down the photographers you are most interested in.

P.S. Save those maternity picture ideas! Many photographers love to see the vision you have in mind for your maternity photography session.

How much does a maternity session cost?

Your geographic location can widely impact what a photographer costs in your area. I live near Muncie, Indiana, about an hour north of Indianapolis. In our area, a skilled photographer typically costs between $300 and $900, while luxury photographers can get into the thousands. If your budget is a concern, don’t be shy about asking your photographer if they offer discounts for packages (such as newborn and maternity) or if they offer payment plans.

Have more questions or want to book? I run a full-time photography studio in Muncie, Indiana. My focus is on belly to baby and I would love to work with you. You can reach us at www.bettyandbobby.com.
